Grammar school makes big reduction on its landfill waste

COLYTON Grammar School has reduced the waste it sends to landfill by 32 per cent in the last year.
Students from the school’s Green Society have audited waste by sorting and weighing the waste produced by the school during one day, and comparing it to an identical audit carried out a year ago.
The audit showed that the school’s recycling rate has risen to 62 per cent, topping the East Devon average of 48 per cent.
Demelza Annison from Resource Futures, which runs waste audits in Devon schools, said: “Colyton Grammar now sends 9.1 tons of waste to landfill (the same weight as nine baby elephants). This has reduced from 13.5 tons (13.5 baby elephants) at the last waste audit. A total reduction in waste to landfill of 32 per cent, which is fantastic!”
